New Milton Traffic and Pedestrian Plan (Issued 24th August)

Restrictions to be lifted

A decision was taken by a majority of 8 votes to 6, at a Meeting of the Full New Milton Town Council yesterday (24th), to remove all the Pedestrian and Traffic Measures which were put in place some weeks ago.  Therefore all the Traffic/Pedestrian Restrictions at Old Milton Road and Station Road will be removed.  This decision by the Town Council has to be ratified by Hampshire County Council who are the Highways Authority which may take a few days to get this approval.  It is provisionally hoped, subject to that approval from Hampshire CC - that these restrictions can be lifted by the end of the week.

New Milton Traffic and Pedestrian Plan

Re-opening New Milton Town Centre safely

As more shops and businesses open in New Milton’s Town Centre, New Milton Town Council has now implemented the urgent and essential Covid-19 safety measures to the road layout in the town centre – to enable safe distancing for shoppers in the town centre.

These measures are part of Government guidance, and were planned in consultation with Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council.
Safe distancing remains at 2 metres. Where 2m is not viable, 1 metre plus distance requires risk mitigation measures. Government guidance includes use of cones and barriers to restrict car access into town centres and to widen footways along lengths of road to allow space for people to queue and socially distance.

These safety measures will need to remain in place as long as social distancing is necessary to protect residents and shoppers – although tweaks will continue to be made to facilitate movement for both pedestrians and drivers.

During this process, the Government also aims to encourage ‘active travel’, improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists into and around town centres.
Local traders and residents are invited to email info@newmiltontowncouncil.gov.uk – or write to the Town Clerk at New Milton Town Council, Town Hall, 2 Ashley Road, New Milton, BH25 6AS – on any specific issues to ensure they are considered during the periodic reviews of the layout.

Message from the Mayor of New Milton

New Milton Town Centre : Message from Councillor Alvin Reid - Mayor of New Milton as the majority of our town centre outlets reopen during this week.

  • All the signage and social distancing rules adopted in the Town are in line with central government guidelines.

  • To facilitate the 2 metre rule, it will be necessary to close small stretches of road and widen some pavements at a few critical ‘pinch points’ especially around the main traffic lights in the town centre.

  • We ask all residents to be cautious with a special request for drivers and cyclists to be extra vigilant especially in areas where the road layout has been changed, or will be changed later in the week.

  • These changes, which are being made for the benefit of all residents, will be kept under constant review, with alterations made as government guidelines evolve and alter over coming weeks. Please take care and remember some residents may be less mobile than others and may therefore need a little extra time to cross roads etc, so please be patient.

  • Stay alert, stay safe, save lives.
